Description
Flames billowing from a burning oil well in Kuwait. This photograph was taken shortly after the end of the Gulf War of 1991, and shows the destruction caused by the fires set by retreating Iraqi troops. The Greater al Burgan oil field, seen here, is the second largest oil field in the world, with remaining recoverable reserves of over 60 billion barrels (one barrel = 159 litres). In this field alone, the Iraqis left 365 oil wells on fire, causing immense surface, marine and atmospheric environmental damage.
