Description
Oil-covered bird. Oil-covered scoter duck (Melanitta sp.) being washed using a shower attachment. Seabirds can become poisoned by the oil as they try to groom their feathers. Oil contamination also damages the insulating properties of plumage, causing birds to die of loss of body heat. This bird was contaminated by the 1996 Sea Empress spill off Milford Haven, South Wales, UK. About 70,000 tonnes of crude oil were released. Photographed at a Royal Society for the Protection of Animals (RSPCA) centre.
