Artist's Description

Ocelot. View of the head of a resting ocelot (Felis pardalis). The ocelot is a cat which inhabits the forest and scrubland of Central and South America. An excellent climber, it spends much of its time in trees, sleeping and hunting above the forest floor. They hunt by night, and unlike most cats, which are solitary, they often live and hunt in pairs. Their prey includes monkeys, deer, rodents, birds, lizards and porcupines. They are not afraid of water, as are some cats, but are powerful swimmers. Ocelot fur was once a very fashionable commodity, and the species has been extensively hunted. It is now an endangered species. Photographed in Belize.
