Artist's Description
Phases of Venus, artwork published in Specula Physico-Mathematico-Historica (1696), a book by the German monk and author Johann Zahn (1641-1707). The labels are in Latin. Venus is at top, and the diagram at centre shows the different phases of Venus that are seen from the Earth (at bottom) as Venus orbits the Sun. The phases are: new, waxing crescent, half, waxing gibbous, full, and then the equivalents for the waning phases. Across bottom is a set of observations of Venus by the astronomers Francesco Fontana (1580-1656) and Johann Wiesel (1583-1662).
