Description
View of the NUSEX (Nucleon Stability Experiment) proton decay detector located in a garage area off the Mont blanc tunnel under some 5000 metres of rock which shields it from most cosmic radiation. The garage is situated on the French side of the French/Italian border which runs under Mont Blanc. The detector is a cube consisting of 134 sheets of 1 centimetre thick iron interleaved with gas- filled plastic streamer tubes. Particles entering the detector (such as cosmic muons or neutrinos) o originating within the detector (from proton or neutron decay) are detected by the streamer tubes and monitored electronically. The detector weighs 150 tons & has been operational since May 1982. It is a collaboration of physicists from 3 Italian institutions & from CERN, the European particle physics lab on the outskirts of Geneva. The large orange structure is a built-in crane.
