Description
Nuclear fuel rod element in reactor. Uranium nuclear fuel rod element under several metres of water, emitting a blue glow called Cerenkov radiation. This is produced when energetic charged particles travel faster through water than light. The core of a nuclear reactor contains rods of nuclear fuel which undergo nuclear fission, releasing large amounts of energy and radiation. This nuclear fuel rod element is part of a research nuclear reactor, used to study the effects of radiation on materials, and for the production of rare and valuable medical and industrial isotopes.
