Description
Non-nuclear explosives testing, Soviet nuclear programme. This explosion was equivalent to 5000 tons of TNT. Explosions of this size produce a mushroom cloud regardless of whether they are produced by a nuclear bomb or conventional explosives. These tests aid calculation of the yields of nuclear bombs, given in equivalent values of tons, kilotons and megatons of the explosive TNT. Hundreds of Soviet nuclear and non-nuclear tests were conducted at various sites from the late 1940s to the end of the 1980s.
