Description
NMR body scanner. A subject inside a Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) body scanner. NMR imaging is a non-invasive technique for studying the internal structures of the body. Unlike other similar techniques (for example, CAT scans) it doesn't use ionising radiation. Instead, NMR works by measuring the response of protons in the atoms of the body tissues to a short bursts of radio waves whilst in a strong magnetic field. This particular NMR device is used to study energy transfer mechanisms in leg muscles as part of space medicine research. Photographed at the German Aerospace Research Center (DLR), Cologne.
