Artist's Description
NGC 1068 spiral galaxy, composite image. This image combines X-ray data from the Chandra X-ray Observatory (red), radio data from the Very Large Array (blue, centre, seen as pink here due to combination other colours), and optical data from the Hubble Space Telescope (green). The radio data shows a rapidly growing supermassive black hole. The X-ray data shows a strong wind from the black hole extending thousands of light years outwards from the core. The image is about 15,000 light years across. NGC 1068 is located around 50 million light years from Earth, in the constellation of Cetus. Image published in 2010.
