New Amsterdam, circa 1650. 20th-century illustration of the settlement of New Amsterdam in the mid-17th century. This settlement, then part of the Dutch colony of New Netherland, later became New York City. It was renamed in 1664. This engraving by Sidney Lawton Smith (1845-1929) was published in 1906.
