Description
False colour transmission electron micrograph of a synapse in the retina of a fresh water roach. The micrograph shows the synaptic ending of a cone photoreceptor cell (left) in contact with a horizontal nerve cell (right/dark). The cone cell contains a synaptic ribbon (filament) surrounded by vesicles (ovals), containing neurotransmitters. The function of the ribbon is unclear beyond its involvement in the release mechanism at synapse. The vesicles discharge the chemical contents (omega shaped in act of release), across the cell membrane, stimulating receptors in the horizontal cell, thereby transmitting electrical impulses.
