Description
Needle biopsy of a woman's breast, showing the needle being introduced into the breast. The needle is guided into position using stereotactic guidance - the use of mammography, an X-ray technique that reveals fine details of internal breast tissues. Mammography is used to screen women for breast cancer; in some cases the appearance of lesion on a mammogram may allow a radiologist to distinguish between a cancerous tumour and other benign conditions such as cysts. A biopsy - the removal of a small tissue sample - is performed on a suspected cancer to determine its histological type. Photographed at King's College Hospital, London.
