Artist's Description
Mission Control, Houston, during Apollo 13. NASA Chief Astronaut Deke Slayton discussing a fix for dangerous carbon dioxide levels during the ill-fated Apollo 13 mission in 1970. An explosion on the moon-bound spacecraft resulted in the loss of most of the crew's oxygen and electricity supplies. Using the Lunar Module as a liferaft solved the oxygen problem, but carbon dioxide built up in the spacecraft atmosphere. Using cardboard, plastic bags and tape, NASA designed a system to utilise the lithium hydroxide CO2 scrubbers from the Command Module, powered by a fan from one of the lunar spacesuits. Apollo 13 made a safe return to Earth.
