Artist's Description

High-speed sequence of a cantering horse made in 1884 by the Britist-American photographer Eadweard James Muybridge (1830-1904). Muybridge pioneered the use of high speed photography and employed ingenious techniques to analyse animal and human locomotion. He did this sequence to settle an argument about the horse's gait. He was able to prove that a cantering horse has all its feet off the ground at times. In doing so he used a set of 24 small cameras with shutter speeds set at 1/500 second. They were released by clockwork or by threads successively broken by the horse. In 1887 Muybridge published Animal locomotion which contained over 20,000 photographs.
