Description
Mute swan (Cygnus olor) family group foraging on a frozen salt marsh at dawn in winter. This group consists of two adults (right, white) and two juveniles (left, white and grey). Mute swans are found in temperate areas of Europe, western Asia and coastal Russia. They feed primarily on insects and aquatic vegetation. A pair of swans usually mate for life, and their offspring will forage with them after fledging at around six months. Juveniles become fully independent and leave their flock after around four years. Photographed off the island of Lindisfarne, Northumberland, UK.
