Muscular dystrophy. Confocal light micrograph images of a section through muscle tissue affected by muscular dystrophy. Muscular dystrophy is a genetic disorder typified by muscle wasting and loss of function. The tissues in the sample include: muscle fibres (purple), mesenchymal tissue (green and yellow), and fat (adipose) tissue (black). This tissue is showing adipose metaplasia, where muscle is being replaced by fat. This is a characteristic symptom of muscular dystrophy.
