Artist's Description
Nerve endings in muscle. Light micrograph of motor neuron end plates (dark dots) in skeletal (striated) muscle. Skeletal muscle is under voluntary control. The motor neuron is seen running from top right to lower centre. The neuron ends in several terminal boutons. These form neuromuscular junctions, a type of synapse (nerve junction), where they meet the muscle cells. Signals are relayed from the end plates to the muscle by the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Brightfield illumination. Magnification: x50 at 35mm size.
