Artist's Description

North American B-25 Mitchell aircraft flying past Mount Vesuvius during an eruption in March 1944. This was the last time the volcano erupted. The 304th Bombardment Group of the US Air Force were stationed at Pompeii Airfield, just a few kilometres from Vesuvius. This eruption damaged around 80 of their aircraft. Vesuvius is most famous for its destruction of the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum in 79 AD, but has erupted many times over the centuries.
