Description
Motion study of fencing. Chronophotography montage showing a fencer in action, as studied by French photographer and gymnast Georges Demeny (1850-1917). Chronophotography is a technique that captures movement in several frames of print, here layered together. Demeny was the principal assistant to French physiologist Etienne-Jules Marey, who pioneered this technique. Demeny and Marey worked together in Paris. After Marey's death, Demeney became professor of physiology at the French national school of gymnastics and fencing at Joinville, where he made this photographic study in 1906.
