Artist's Description
Computer graphics representation of a lysozyme molecule, an important catalytic enzyme that is capable of cleaving sugar structures in biological systems. It has been isolated from many sources, including egg white. The structure of lysozyme was first obtained in 1965 by D. C. Phillips et al at the Royal Institution in London. In this image the protein is shown in blue, the backbone of which is traced out by a magenta ribbon and the substrate is shown in yellow, bound to the active site. The classical lock & key" description of enzyme action is clearly illustrated in this image by the insertion of the substrate into the active site."
