Artist's Description
MOD-1 lunar lander control panel. Panel to control propellant gases that power the MOD-1 lunar lander built by Armadillo Aerospace, USA. This amateur-built rocket is competing for the X-Prize Foundation's Lunar Lander Challenge. MOD-1 is powered by a liquid oxygen and ethanol rocket. The winner of the Lunar Lander Challenge must be able to take off with a payload, reach an altitude of 50 metres, hover for 90 seconds then land on a target 100 metres away. The flight must then be repeated in reverse within a two and a half hours. Photographed in 2007 at Holloman Airforce Base, New Mexico, USA.
