Mitosis. Rotated 3D-structured illumination micrographs (3D-SIM) of the nucleus of a mouse myoblast cell during the prophase stage of mitosis (nuclear division). During mitosis two daughter nuclei are formed from one parent nucleus. The chromosomes (red) are condensing into defined units, allowing organised and equal segregation into daughter nuclei. Each chromosome consists of two identical chromatids. The nuclear envelope (lamina stained green) is breaking down to allow microtubules to interact with the chromosomes. The two circular depressions at bottom right and top left are the centrosomes. Microtubules will grow from these and attach to the chromosomes, before contracting and pulling the chromatids to opposite poles. The cell goes on to divide in half, with each new cell retaining a copy of the parent cell's genetic information.
