Description
Mining safety research. Researcher testing electrical motors being used in a mine safety research laboratory in the 1940s. Health and safety research in the UK started with investigations in the early 20th century into safety in mines, attempting to ascertain the causes of explosions and other mining disasters. After initial work in 1911, the Safety in Mines Research Board (SMRB) was founded in 1921 and laboratories established at Buxton and Sheffield. The Safety in Mines Research Establishment (SMRE) was founded in 1947, one of the precursors to the Health and Safety Laboratory (HSL) that formed in 1995.
