Micro black hole event in CERN's ATLAS detector. Computer-generated simulation depicting the results of an experiment that produced a microscopic black hole. Two protons were collided at high energies in the ATLAS detector of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, the European particle physics laboratory. The brief presence of a micro black hole was deduced from the particles produced as the black hole decayed (evaporated). The colours of the tracks show different types of particles emerging from the collision (at centre). A human figure is shown for scale. The concept of black hole evaporation and micro black holes was put forward in the 1970s by British physicist and cosmologist Stephen Hawking (1942-2018). Image published in March 2008.
