Description
Mercury drops in a petri dish with a thermometer. Mercury, or quicksilver, is a dense, silvery metal that is liquid at room temperature. The metal has a high surface tension, and so small droplets form almost perfect spheres, accounting for its quick- flowing motion when spilt. Despite its toxicity, mercury's uniform expansion over the Celsius scale and its high thermal conductivity (allowing it to be sensitive to temperature changes) explains its use in bulb thermometers.
