Description
Mendeleyev's periodic table of 1869. This is an early form of the periodic table, with similar chemical elements arranged horizontally. Chemical symbols and the atomic weights are used. The final version (1871) had the elements arranged in the familiar vertical columns or groups. This periodic table was drawn up by the Russian chemist Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleyev (1834-1907). He left gaps in the table for new elements, that were indeed later discovered, vindicating his theory. The noble gas elements (such as helium) had not been discovered. Reading from top to bottom and left to right, the first four gaps awaited scandium (1879), gallium (1875), germanium (1886) and technetium (1937). See also H413/377.
