Membrane ion channels. Illustration of the mechanism of action for ion channel proteins (grey). These proteins, embedded in a cell membrane (phospholipid bilayer, orange), act as channels for ions (purple spheres) moving into and out of a cell. The channel is open at left and closed at right. Biochemical signals prompt the opening and closing of the channels. Ions diffuse down an electrochemical gradient to pass through an open channel.
