Description
Melting Greenland glaciers. Satellite image of the outlets of two large Greenland glaciers. Sea ice is at right. The coastline runs down centre. At upper left is the outlet of the Nioghalvfjerdsfjorden glacier. At lower centre is the outlet of the Zachariae Isstrom glacier. Research published in 2015 found that the latter has detached and is melting at a rate of 5 billion tons per year. The former is also melting, but at a slower rate. Together, they make up 12 percent of Greenland's ice sheet, and the complete collapse of both glaciers could raise sea levels by nearly half a metre. Image obtained on 20 August 2014 by the Landsat 8 satellite.
