Artist's Description

Melon jellyfish. Macrophotograph of a melon jellyfish, Beroe sp.. Melon jellyfish are part of the Ctenophora class of comb jellyfish, so called because of the rows of tiny, hair-like cilia along the length of their bodies. These cilia beat in pulses to propel the jellyfish through the water. The cilia are so close together that they cause interference effects with the light; the different distances between the cilia during a pulse producing a range of colours. Melon jellyfish grow up to 5cm long and feed on plankton using retractable, feathery tentacles (withdrawn here) which stick to the prey. Melon jellyfish are found in seas around the world.
