Description
Medical hieroglyphics, Egypt. These are carved on the walls of the temple dedicated to the Ancient Egyptian god of fertility Sobek. The temple, which is actually part of the Kom-Ombo double temple, dates from the Ptolemaic period, and construction started in the early second century BC. This wall of carvings is from an area called the outer corridor. Four panels are seen here, depicting a range of medical instruments, including: scalpels, forceps, hooks, pestles and mortars, bone saws, a scrub brush (lower centre), measuring spoons, scales, suction cups, lances, chisels, retractors, and dentistry tools.
