Artist's Description

Measuring electrostatic repulsion. 19th-century illustration of an apparatus used to measure electrostatic repulsion. This is a type of electroscope, a device used to measure the presence and magnitude of electric charge. A mass placed on the balance at left will allow a measurement of what force is needed to balance the repulsive electric charge at right. This illustration is from 'Physique Populaire' (Emile Desbeaux, 1891).
