Mayan excavation, 1950s. Researcher taking notes below a carved stone slab at an excavation site at Palenque, Chiapas, Mexico. Palenque was a Mayan city. The Maya were an ancient Mesoamerican civilization that inhabited southern Mexico and nearby areas for thousands of years from the second millennium BC to the Spanish conquest in the 16th century. This photograph is from the papers of US anthropologist John Alden Mason (1885-1967). Photographed circa 1951.
