Description
Mars heat shield research. Close-up of a flow of heated air being used to test future heat shield technologies. This system is NASA's Adaptive Deployable Entry and Placement Technology (ADEPT). This is a mechanically-deployable heat shield that uses carbon fabric and is flexible, expanding like an umbrella. This test, at the Ames Research Center, simulated the conditions created when entering the Martian atmosphere. A bow shock has form in front of the ADEPT device. Surface temperatures on the heat shield reached several thousand degrees Celsius. The heat shield is infused with resin protective layers that prevent degradation of the stitched fabric. Photographed in 2015.
