Description
Map of the solar eclipse of 15 May 1836, accurately predicting the path that would be traced by the shadow cast by this annular eclipse. The central line (grey, some 200 kilometres wide) started near the equator in the Pacific (left) at 12:18 UTC, passed over the UK and northern Europe, and ended near the Caspian Sea (right) at 15:44 UTC. This type of eclipse occurs when the Moon is slightly more distant in its orbit, so that its passage across the Sun causes a ring-shaped (annular) eclipse, rather than a total one. This diagram is from 'An Introduction to Practical Astronomy', published by William Pearson in several volumes between 1824 and 1829.
