Artist's Description
Map of Anglo-Saxon England. 18th-century map of Anglo-Saxon England according to the 9th-century Anglo-Saxon Chronicle. The key (upper left) includes symbols used for religious places, former bishop's seats, country seats, castles, and battles. The script used is a form of Old English orthography. The major kingdoms ('rice') are: Northumbria (Nordanhymbra), Mercia (Miercna), East Anglia (East Engla), Essex (East Seaxna), Kent (Cantaware), Sussex (Sud Seaxna), and Wessex (West Seaxna). Together, these formed the Anglo-Saxon Heptarchy. Map from 'A General History of England' (1744-1751) by British historian William Guthrie (1708-1770).
