Artist's Description
Many-coloured polypore fungi (Coriolus versicolor) on the base of a trunk of a flowering cherry tree (Prunus sp.). This is a very common fungus that occurs on rotting tree stumps. The tiers of brackets are small and thin (about 4 to 10 centimetres across and 3 to 5 centimetres wide), with different coloured zones on the top. The underside has purple and brown bands and pores for the liberation of spores. They are corky and inedible and occur mainly in late summer and in autumn.
