Greenhouse tomato harvest. View of a man picking ripe red tomatoes (Lycopersicon esculentum) from plants in a commercial glasshouse (greenhouse). Several green, unripe tomatoes are also seen, which are left on the plants to ripen. Growing plants in greenhouses allows protection from adverse weather and insect pests. Light intensity, temperature and humidity can all be monitored and controlled. Glasshouses also allow pesticides and chemical fertilisers to be used without a risk of them escaping to damage the environment.
