Artist's Description
Malcolm Sim Longair (born 1941), British astrophysicist, by Maxwell's desk with the apparatus (left) used by Maxwell to test the variation of gas viscosity with temperature and pressure. Longair was Jacksonian Professor of Natural Philosophy at the University of Cambridge (1991-2008). His work has been primarily in high-energy astrophysics and cosmology. Astronomer Royal for Scotland (1980 to 1990) and President of the Royal Astronomical Society (1996 to 1998), he was made CBE (2000) and Fellow of the Royal Society (2004). Photographed in 2007, in the Cavendish Laboratory museum, Cambridge, UK.
