Artist's Description
Illustration of 19th century north-country mail coaches at the Peacock Inn, Islington, London, England. In Great Britain mail coaches carried postal deliveries from 1784. The coaches also carried passengers, and were faster than stage coaches. They were phased out in the 1840s and 1850s with the coming of the railways. This is an engraving from an image by James Pollard (1792-1867) and was published in 1838.
