Artist's Description
Magnetic field with iron filings. Image using iron filings to show the pattern of the magnetic field when a soft iron ring (centre) is placed between two bar magnets (left and right) with their north poles facing each other. The area inside the ring is shielded from the magnetic field and therefore clear of iron filings. This property is used to protect sensitive electrical components from magnetic fields. Soft iron has a low carbon content and is easily magnetised and de-magnetised.
