Magnesium burning. A sample of magnesium ribbon burning in air. Magnesium is a semi-soft, silvery- white metal. When heated in excess air, it will burn with a brilliant white flame. This property has meant its use in flares and photographic flash bulbs. On burning it forms a white solid residue of magnesium oxide.
