Butterfly wing. Macrophotograph of the wing of a painted lady butterfly, Vanessa cardui. The small overlapping scales that produce the colouration and patterning on the wing are flattened hairs. This reddish-orange species is found everywhere but South America thanks to its powerful migratory urge. Every year painted ladies cross the Mediterranean Sea from Africa to Europe in order to breed, sometimes arriving in enormous numbers. Magnification: x6 at 5x7cm size. x3 at 35mm
