Artist's Description
Macrophage. Artwork of a section through a macrophage. The cytoplasm (blue, purple, right half) is separated from the nuclear material (red and orange) by membranes of the nucelus and endoplasmic reticulum. Macrophages are a type of white blood cell (leucocyte) which defends the body against invading micro-organisms. When a macrophage encounters a pathogen, it engulfs and destroys it, a process called phagocytosis. They are present throughout the body but are mainly found in the lymph, connective tissue and lungs. This image forms the first in a three part series, see also images: P276/202 and P276/203.
