Artist's Description
Macedonian phalanx. Illustration of the military unit from Ancient Greece, known as a phalanx. This was a rectangular formation, usually composed of heavy infantry armed with weapons such as very long spears. This phalanx and its round shields and sarissas depict the infantry of Macedon in the 4th century BC at the time of Philip II and his successor Alexander III (Alexander the Great). The sarissas were spears 4-6 metres long, joined in two sections by a bronze tube. These sarissa-wielding phalanxes were critical to the success of Alexander the Great as he conquered much of the known world.
