Lunar phases seen behind the silhouette of a chimney. Composite image of the phases of the moon, as seen from Earth during a lunar (synodic) month. During the cycle the right side of the moon is visible first (far right). The visible portion increases during each phase (waxing) until it appears as a full moon (centre). The moon is then said to be waning, as the visible portion decreases (images left of centre).
