Artist's Description
The LSD (Liquid Scintillation Detector) neutrino telescope, located in the Mont Blanc tunnel where 6000 metres of rock shield it from most cosmic radiation. The LSD consists of 72 stainless steel tanks containing an organic liquid which emits tiny flashes of light when charged particles pass through it. Commissioned in 1984, the telescope will detect bursts of antineutrinos emitted when stars collapse at the core of supernova explosions. Antineutrinos traversing one of the LSD's tanks may interact with a proton to produce a neutron & positron; the positron is a charged particle which will produce scintillation light in the tank's liquid.
