Description
LOLA lunar landing simulator, 1960s. Artist using a photograph to the Moon to recreate the lunar surface on the Lunar Orbit and Landing Approach (LOLA) simulator. This was built as NASA's Langley Research Center, Virgina, USA, in the 1960s as part of Project Apollo. It was intended to help astronauts practice for landing on the Moon. The expensive project consisted of four murals and a track (lower right) along which the astronaut moved in a cockpit. The simulator was found to be unnecessary as it proved to be easier to navigate over the Moon than expected. The simulator was dismantled soon after the Apollo program was discontinued.
