Description
Brain tissue. Light micrograph of a section through human nervous tissue from the cerebrum of the brain. There are several nerve cells (orange bodies) surrounded by associated dendrites. Some nuclei are visible as darker patches at the centre of the cells. Nerve processes are of two types: a single large axon (the output nerve fibre) and many branching dendrites as smaller input processes that serve as sensory receptors. Grey matter in the brain consists mainly of cell bodies and branched dendrites. Grey matter in the cortex of the cerebrum is involved in conscious thought, memory and sensation. Magnification unknown.
