Artist's Description
Lung cancer cells. Light micrograph of malignant cancer cells seen in a sample of lung tissue from a bronchial biopsy. These are squamous cells that line the bronchial airways of the lungs. Here they have lost their regular squamous cell shapes. Many of the cell nuclei (dark) are enlarged, a characteristic of cancer cells. Cancers of the bronchi are the most common form of lung cancer. These cells can invade surrounding tissue and spread through the body via the lymphatic system. The condition can be treated using anti-cancer drugs and surgery. Haemotoxylin and Eosin stained cells. Magnification: x40 at 35mm size.
