Description
Light micrograph of a section through the human cerebellum, showing the tangled complexity of nerve pathways. There may be as many as 50,000 dendrites (the fine processes from a nerve cell body) making contact with a single cell body - each capable of conveying a message from another nerve cell. These nerve circuits carry both excitatory and inhibitory messages: whether or not a particular nerve cell fires" depends on the net effect of both these types of message. The human cerebellum coordinates fine movement, posture and balance and is responsible for our manual dexterity. Specimen prepared with silver stain Bodian. Reference: MICROCOSMOS, figure 2.19, page 24."
